Temporary Hair Removal - Epilation
Epilation is a term used to describe mass plucking of hairs. Whilst it would be a marathon of a task to remove hairs individually with tweezers, there are ways of doing it much faster.

Probably the first form of epilation ever is known as threading. Like colonic hydrotherapy, this orginated in the ancient Middle East, another sign of how highly developed the Egyptians were. They called it fatlah. It's basically a way of using a coil of string to trap and pull out unwanted hairs, and although it's considered less painful than plucking by many, it is pretty obscure these days and you may find it very hard to come by someone who can do it to you.

In the modern age epilation is relatively easy to come by thanks to electricity! Most epilators take the form of a row of rotating tweezers, although a few use vibrating wire coils. Simply plug in, run over the skin and hairs are removed by the root.

Epilation machines can remove hairs relatively quickly and being that they remove them by the roots, they offer some advantages:

Hair regrowth is slow, typically it'll be a couple of weeks

Hairs get softer the more you remove them through epilation much as with waxing

It's clean and you only ever have to buy an epilator once which means that it gets cheaper and cheaper the longer you stick with it

It's one of the easiest ways of removing hair solo as waxing can be difficult in certain areas and requires a fair amount of determination to pull the hair out, making it easier if you can get someone to help you

On the flip side, epilation doesn't suit everyone because:

If you have thick hair you may find it too painful at first to persevere with

It can be uncomfortable on sensitive areas and some places are hard to reach, like the backs of the legs

You need the hair to be of a certain length before you can epilate of else the tweezers can't grab it to pluck

Very fine hair is hard to treat effectively
If you do decide to epilate, make sure that you pull the skin tight. This prevents snagging and makes the hair removal treatment less painful. You may also find it best when you've had a hot bath and then dried off. Make the room warm while you are epilating as cold air will draw the skin tighter making the epilation less comfortable.

Personally my hair was too dense and thick when I tried to epilate and within minutes I my eyes were watering and I was quivering like I was having a fit. However I do know some people who've had good results through them, so it is a case of horses for courses. If you find that the sensation of having hairs rapidly plucked is tolerable to you, epilation can be a cheap, quick and effective way of removing your hair that can easily be performed solo.

How To Use The Epilator

If you’re tired of shaving your legs, only to have stubble appear in a few hours, you might want to consider an alternate form of hair removal. An epilator works just like waxing, by removing the whole hair. It will re-grow after three or 4 weeks but with repeated use may become less coarse. Read these guidelines to ease the discomfort.

Instructions
Step1
Grow your hair. This might be the hardest part of all since the hair shaft needs to be at least ¼ of an inch long for the epilator to successful grab and pull it out.

Step2
Adjust the speed of your epilator for efficiency. Hair comes in all thicknesses and coarse hair has a tendency to break when an epilator is set at high speeds. Experiment on an area where your hair is the thickest and set the epilator to the highest speed you can without breakage.

Step3
Take a nice hot bath. The warm water will relax your pores and allow for easier removal. Dry your skin well but leave it bare, lotions and creams will cause the hair shaft to become slick and hinder removal.

Step4
Start on an area with fine hair to adapt to the sensation before proceeding to coarser hair. Using an epilator is uncomfortable but you can minimize the pain by starting with the least resistant hair.

Step5
Pull your skin tight. With your opposite hand, stretch the area of skin you're working on so the epilator can pull out the hairs easily. Stretching the skin will greatly reduce the discomfort and allow for a quick, clean removal.

Step6
Take a break. Everyone has a different tolerance level and you can spread your epilating over a few days instead of trying to do the whole thing in one evening. Plan ahead if you have a big event coming up so your epilating is complete at least two days before.

Step7
Tone your skin with a good body toner after epilating to encourage the reddened pores to close and heal. You can make your own by adding 1 part of white vinegar to 3 parts of water. Just moisten a washcloth and gently dab it on.

Step8
Exfoliate your skin a couple of days after you epilate. Use either a good coarse loofah sponge or a body scrub to rub away dead skin cells, discourage those little red bumps and leave your skin silky smooth.

Tips & Warnings
Hold the epilator just above the skin. Running it along the skin’s surface will bend the hair shaft making it harder to remove.

Try a different method of hair removal if your hair is very coarse and the epilator won't remove it.

Silky Smooth
I bought my first Epilady in 1988. I was hooked imediately. After the first inital epilation, I couldn't believe how smooth and soft my legs were! That was a long time ago, and I have become a lifetime fan and promoter of this product. When the Discrette came out, I bought one for myself and my girlfriend, who is now hooked on this system. Fabulous Hair Removal System
I purchased the Emjoi Optima two years ago. I have used it constantly with NO problems. My daughters (23 & 25) have used it also and liked it so much, I had to purchase one for each of them because they were always borrowing mine!
As for the results it produces, what hair grows back, grows back much softer and lighter. I found I could actually go weeks without shaving my legs, and they would feel as smoother than legs that had been just shaved. It is time consuming, but well worth the inital amount of time it takes for that first hair removeal. After that, it's just minor touch-ups when necessary. So, if you're of (or over) that certain age (or like my daughters and want that smooth soft feel and look), you'll be glad you invested in this!
